GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - A fundraiser is being held Saturday afternoon to help a teenager who was badly injured in a go-kart accident.
24-Hour News 8 first brought viewers the story of Shelbi Crouch in July. Crouch’s hair was caught in the rear axle of a go-kart and was ripped from her head.
Her mother says Shelbi was never told before the ride to put her hair up.
In an investigation, 24-Hour News 8’s I-Team 8 found signs telling drivers to restrain their hair were put up after the accident and that industry standards calling for covers on axles were not followed.
Organizers say the weekend fundraiser is about helping Shelbi Crouch and her family pay for medical bills and to help lift her spirits.
“It'll be good for her to get out and get to see people. I don't think she realizes how many people are supporting her,” mother Sherri Crouch-Wilson said.
After she heals more, Crouch and her family plans to lobby lawmakers to put regulations on go-kart tracks.
The fundraiser is being held at the Greenwood Baskin Robbins on U.S. 31 from noon to 6 p.m.
