GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - Hundreds of planes flying into or out of the Greenwood Municipal Airport will be rerouted while the runway is lengthened.
The $1 million project began Monday. Planes are currently not allowed to take off or land while construction takes place.
Airports manager Ralph Hill says the project will put a stop to the 70 landings and takeoffs at the airport on an average day.
Right now there is only one runway, but the airport is expected to get busier one construction is complete because a longer runway will appeal to more pilots.
The airport will remain closed through Sept. 27.
The airport will close again for a few days at County Line Road and Emerson Avenue in October and early November for finishing touches.
