Hospital trims $40k in energy costs, seeks more

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana hospital is racking up the savings by taking steps to reduce its energy use.
The Republic reports that Columbus Regional Hospital is saving $40,000 a year in part by using more energy-efficient light bulbs in parking lots, installing sensors that automatically turn off lights when rooms aren't occupied and using timers to adjust thermostats.
Director of facilities and materials management Dave Lenart says the hospital hopes to cut its energy usage by 20 percent within the next five years.
Lenart says the hospital is also analyzing its heating and cooling water systems for additional energy savings.
The changes stem from a review of energy usage that was done after the hospital was flooded in 2008.
