IU: International students pose challenges

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana University is seeing record enrollment by international students, but some faculty say the numbers aren't all cause for celebration.

The number of international students has jumped 70 percent system wide since 2005. Most of the nearly 7,800 students are enrolled at the Bloomington campus.

IU vice president for international affairs David Zaret tells The Herald-Times the students bring diversity to campus and enhance the educational experience of domestic students.

But some faculty are worried about the students' lack of proficiency in English and different academic ethical standards.

IU says it's taking steps to address language proficiency and now requires all new international students to present proof of passing a language proficiency test before being admitted.

IU ranks 11th nationally in international student population. Purdue University ranks fifth.
