Grill, wind blamed in massive Greenwood fire

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - An unattended grill and windy conditions are being blamed for a large building fire poured black smoke into the air in southern Greenwood on Monday afternoon.

The smoke was so heavy that Greenwood Fire Department received call after call, telling them to go to a home near the interstection of Worthsville Road and Sheek Road.

GFD Chief James Sipes said firefighters arrived to find about 80 percent of a duplex burning, so they called for more help. Investigators traced the blaze to a backyard grill.

A resident said he stepped away from the grill briefly, and when he came back, flames were racing up the wall.

WInd may be to blame.

"The wind really caused us a few issues [Monday], with 5-10 mph winds and gusts that occurred," Sipes said.

He said fire did spread to the south unit in the duplex, but firefighters were able to stop it from doing too much damage there.

No one was hurt in the fire.
