Motorists rescue Franklin man from fiery I-65 crash

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - A group of motorists helped rescue a man from a crash along Interstate 65 at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Indiana State Police officials said.

The crash was in the southbound lanes near the 95-mile marker, which is between the Franklin and Greenwood exits.

When a UPS driver happened upon the crash, which forced the vehicle into flames, he used his CB radio to ask anyone with a fire extinguisher to stop and help.

It worked.

Two men used a pry bar to get 27-year-old Anthony Ingle out of his burning car. In the meantime, other motorists used fire extinguishers to keep flames down during the rescue.

Ingle was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital with head injuries and burns to his knee.

ISP officials said Ingle was in his 2001 Pontiac Grand Am when he lost control, went off the right side of the road, went up the embankment and struck the County Road 600 overpass. He then slid back onto I-65 and his car caught fire. Drugs and alcohol aren’t suspected as a cause of the crash.

Inspectors will be checking into the overpass.
