GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - Greenwood officials are considering a new fee of up to $500 if police officers have to make multiple visits to keep the peace at an event or location, 24-Hour News 8 news partner the Daily Journal reports .
The goal of the proposal, which the Greenwood City Council would have to approve, is to recoup costs when officers end up on unexpected security details, to discourage out-of-control gatherings and to encourage residents and businesses to arrange with police for proper security before events at which a large and potentially rowdy crowd is expected.
The goal is not meant to generate revenue above that, said Greenwood Police Chief John Laut.
The new fee would be part of an update to the city’s rules for special events, Laut said.
Greenwood decided to pursue the requirement after a mad rush for the shoes at the Greenwood Park Mall earlier this year. Hundreds of people started racing to get in line, damaging a landscaping light in the parking lot. Greenwood police had to call in backup from five police departments to handle the crowd.
The council will consider the proposal at its next meeting on Dec. 17.
