Some Ind. police agencies seek higher pay

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - Some Indiana police agencies are seeking higher salaries for their officers to keep them from being hired away by other police departments.
Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett says 11 former sheriff's department employees are now Columbus police officers. That's more than a quarter of his department's 40 full-time officers.
Gorbett believes most of those officers were lured away by higher pay because his highest-ranking deputies can earn up to a $6,000 more with Columbus police.
He plans to ask county officials this summer to approve college and military benefits, along with parity pay with Columbus police for his department's ranking officers.
But The Republic reports the Columbus Police Department has its own officer-retention problems. It's lost seven officers during the past five years to larger Indiana cities.
