Greenwood, Ind. (WISH) - The Clark-Pleasant school district previously spent more than $3 million to turn the old middle school into a freshman center when officials were worried about running out of space for students.
However, the freshman center now has empty classrooms that are not used by either teachers or students.
The school district cannot afford to hire teachers to staff the freshman center classrooms, our partners at the Daily Journal report.
At Clark-Pleasant Middle School, 200 more students could fill the classes and hallways, interim Superintendent Becky Courtney-Knight said.
The school district remodeled school buildings and added space for years because of more students heading to the district.
But due to the economy, student growth has slowed significantly.
Now the district has empty classrooms, but not at the grade levels where it is needed.
