GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - A federal judge will rule by May 28 whether to allow prayer during graduation ceremonies at Greenwood High School.

The judge heard arguments from both sides Friday morning.

The ACLU of Indiana filed suit in federal court on behalf of 18-year-old Erick Workman who is the senior class' valedictorian.

Workman believes prayer violates church and state and that the judge should issue an injunction.

"The Supreme Court has held specifically it is unconstitutional to have prayer at graduation," said Ken Falk with the ACLU.

However, the school argued students voted to allow prayer at their graduation. It believes this is a freedom of speech issue not a First Amendment issue.

Despite the lawsuit, Workman still expects to speak at the graduation ceremony.
