MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - A teen is dead after he lost control of the ATV he was driving in Morgan County Wednesday evening, police said.

According to Indiana Conservation Officers, Tyler Rowland, 14, Martinsville, was riding his Polaris Ranger ATV near the intersection of Bryan Cemetary and Moulton Road when he lost control.

The teen was near a curve in the roadway when the ATV rolled on to the driver's side and he was thrown from the vehicle.

Medics arrived and requested a medical helicopter to the scene. Tyler was pronounced dead while being transported by ambulance to the medical helicopter, according to authorities.

"As we move through this difficult time, we appreciate all the reciprocated compassion we have received through prayers, support, fellowship and respect of privacy," Tyler's family said in a statement Thursday.

His 14-year-old passenger received minor injuries during the crash.

Officials said preliminary information indicates that speed is a contributing factor in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation, and additional witnesses are being interviewed.
