Timeline: Teen shot at middle school

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Friday’s tragic shooting of a Martinsville middle school student started with a cryptic post to Facebook at 1 a.m.

At 1 a.m., the suspected shooter, a 15-year-old middle schooler, posted this on his Facebook page: "Don't use your mind, use your nine," perhaps an ominous reference to a 9 .mm handgun.

He likely wasn't at his own house when he posted that message. Instead he was spending the night with Tonya Haltom and her teenage son. Haltom says the shooting suspect left her home at 6 a.m.

"He was fine. He was happy go lucky," said Haltom.

An hour later, at about 7 a.m., that apparently happy-go-lucky teenager posted this on his Facebook page: "Today is the day."

At about 7:15 a.m., 15 minutes after that foreboding Facebook post, shots rang out in a vestibule of Martinsville West Middle School.

Fifteen-year-old Chance Jackson was shot twice in the stomach and flown by lifeline to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Class was scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m., but when the bell rang on Friday, teachers took on the role of security officers, locking the doors to their classrooms as part of a Level 3 lockdown. No students were allowed out of the classrooms, and no one could get into the building except heavily armed members of the bomb squad who feared more terror had been planted inside.

Meanwhile, police scoured the area for the shooter and found the teenager they believe was responsible just after 8 a.m.

The search did not end with the arrest. For at least two more hours after the arrest, 24-Hour News 8 watched from Chopper 8 as officers searched the area around the school for evidence — specifically the gun — which they say they found in a field southwest of the school.
