Town pays $68K in back taxes to IRS

PARAGON, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana town avoided an Internal Revenue Service takeover of its finances by paying more than $68,000 in back taxes.

Paragon Clerk-Treasurer Debbie Ellis tells The Reporter-Times of Martinsville that Paragon's town council voted last week to take out a $77,000 certificate of deposit to pay the IRS and the Indiana Department of Revenue.

Ellis says the town had not paid money owed to the IRS since the third quarter of 2010, and also had failed to pay the state some money it was owed. She says Paragon also had failed to pay employees' unemployment insurance, the town's utility tax or into the public employees retirement fund.

Ellis says the town's previous clerk-treasurer failed to make the payments, leading to the town's charge card being canceled.inm
