Training to help therapists treat service members

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Mental health providers can get tools to help them treat members of the military and their families through free training sessions offered through Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington.
Mike Marn of Purdue University's Military Family Research Institute tells The Herald-Times that many military families hesitate to seek help with mental health issues. He says getting help within the military system often carries a stigma, and many civilian providers don't understand issues unique to service members.
The training will help providers treat those serving in the military and their families. Those who complete the program can be included in a registry for military families.
The Indiana National Guard, the Center for Deployment Psychology and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration also are collaborating in the training program.
