Trains to speed up through IU campus

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A railroad says trains will soon be going faster on a line crossing the Indiana University campus in Bloomington.

The Indiana Rail Road Co. is raising the speed limit on trains through the city from the current 10 mph to 25 mph. Officials say the faster speeds will start Monday and follow the installation of new rails and crossties and drainage improvements.

Railroad president Tom Hoback says the company has posted dozens of warning signs along the right of way and asks that students and others not travel along the rail line.

The Indianapolis-based railroad says the faster speeds will reduce the waiting time at crossings. It says a mile-long train going 10 mph needs six minutes to pass, while one going 25 mph needs just over 2 minutes.
