BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - An out-of-state resident died on Interstate 65 Friday afternoon, south of Columbus, Bartholomew County Sheriff's Maj. Todd Noblitt said.
The driver’s tire blew out, causing the driver to lose control of the car about five miles south of Columbus. The car careened off the road, rolling several times.
A passenger in the back seat of the car was ejected from the car. Although officers called for a medical helicopter, 40-year-old Karita Bucumi, of Richmond, Va., died at the scene. The driver and two children, ages 1 and 5, suffered only minor injuries.
Police officials said the group was headed to Kentucky to visit friends.
The crash closed southbound lanes for about an hour, but they have since reopened.
