CLOVERDALE, IND.(WISH) - A 90 year old World War II pilot is recovering tonight after his experimental aircraft crashes.

The incident happened around 3:30 pm in an open field in rural Cloverdale.

Investigators say the single engine, "Woody Pusher," had complete motor failure and flipped on its top as it was coming down.

Vernon E. Bothwell Junior, was able to free himself.

He was taken to Putnam County Hospital for a possible broken ankle.

The Federal Aviation Administration is working with the Indiana State Police on the investigation.

The Banner-Graphic newspaper reports the Greencastle man is a former Army Air Corps and Air Force pilot who flew dozens of missions in both World War II.

He celebrated his 90th birthday in May with the gift of a place of honor at the Putnam County Airport.
