HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - An accident in Avon Saturday night sent a woman to IU Health Methodist Hospital via Lifeline.
A sergeant with the Avon Police Department said two officers in two separate vehicles were in route to an armed robbery where suspects were believed to be involved in an earlier robbery. The vehicles were heading northbound on North State Road 267.
A witness says she heard police sirens passing by her house. When she looked out the window, she saw the second police car hit her neighbor who was driving.
The undercover SUV ended up on top of the other vehicle involved.
Inside of the undercover vehicle was officer Tom Owens, who has been with the Avon Police Department for two years and was with the Plainfield Police Department for five or six years prior.
The witness ran outside and was able to help Owens out of the vehicle.
Owens, who was driving the undercover SUV, also a K-9 vehicle, suffered from head injuries and was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital. There was also a K-9 officer in the vehicle who was taken to a veterinarian to be examined.
The woman involved in the crash was taken by Lifeline to IU Health Methodist Hospital. Her injuries are described as serious, but there was no report on her condition at 11:30 p.m.
The scene was cleared at around 11:40 p.m. and State Road 267 was reopened just north of Rockville Road.
Hendricks County is taking over the investigation. It is too soon to determine who is at fault in the accident.
