CLAYTON, Ind. (WISH) - Firefighters in Liberty Township say a home without working fire detectors in Clayton, Ind. was destroyed in a fire early Monday morning.

Officials say they were sent to a home in the 3000 block of Main Street around 3:30 a.m. When crews arrived on scene, they found heavy fire coming from the residence.

The homeowners were home at the time of the fire, but were able to escape safely.

Fire crews were able to quickly put out the fire, but say the home is a total loss. Initial investigation shows the cause was electrical, but a final investigation is still pending. Firefighters say the home did not have any working fire detectors.

"We urge homeowners to check your smoke detectors on a regular basis, these homeowners were very lucky to make it out alive, " said Matthew Petro, Public Information Officer with the Fire Department of Liberty Township.

The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
