Avon residents return to homes

AVON, Ind. (WISH) - An earthen dam failed just north of Avon because of the high water Tuesday morning. The flooding was bad enough to force the evacuation of 16 mobile homes but it could have been tragic.

It happened at Indian Head Lake where a wall of water washed over the dam and took 30-percent of the dam with it.

Downstream is a trailer park where the mobile homes were evacuated at about 7 a.m. Some of the residents returned during the noon hour to check on their belongings.

Glenn McSchooler kept watching White Lick Creek as he walked through the Riverside North trailer park.

Ducks swim near his home but so far nothing is swimming inside. He said his house is OK, so far.

"If it happens, it happens," shrugged McSchooler.

Dave Frye admitted being nervous as he checked out the neighborhood but he liked what he saw.

For the residents of Riverside North, the relief is easy to calculate. But residents continue to keep not just one eye on the creek but also one on the sky.

Tuesday is the second time in three years that the residents of Riverside North have been evacuated.

There are four other homes between them and the Indian Lake Dam. They also survived Tuesday morning's scare unscathed.
