GREENCASTLE, Ind. (AP) - A collection of letters written to the first president of DePauw University is now part of the university's archives thanks to a donation by a family of DePauw alumni.

Dr. William Dugan and his family presented the collection of five notebooks of letters written to Matthew Simpson from 1838 through the 1840s while he served as president of what then was known as Indiana Asbury University.

Dugan tells the Banner-Graphic in Greencastle that he obtained the letters as part of his stamp-collecting hobby.

DePauw archivist Wesley Wilson says the gift comes during DePauw's 175th anniversary year and is an important addition to its history.
