Duke Energy to host Cayuga bald eagle viewing day

CAYUGA, Ind. (AP) — People will have a chance to see bald eagles up close when Duke Energy hosts a viewing day at a popular gathering spot for the national symbol in western Indiana.

The area around the Duke plant in the Vermillion County town of Cayuga draws Indiana's largest population of bald eagles during mid-winter. Warm water discharged from the power plant prevents the Wabash River from freezing, which attracts fish the eagles feed on.

The viewing is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26. Reservations aren't needed.

In addition to the outdoor bird viewing, the event features presentations with captive live eagles at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Duke's Cayuga Station is about 30 miles north of Terre Haute along Indiana 63.
