INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - For days, 24-Hour News 8 has been investigating how a Seymour man pulled off an incredible ruse. He pretended to be a psychologist, got a license and treated patients across Indiana .

The state attorney general petitioned to suspend David Mowry's license on Friday, March 12. But Mowry had been treating patients in at least three Indiana cities. Thursday, we contacted the agencies that employed him.

David Mowry's college transcripts look real. They're on heavy paper and have an embossed seal in the corner. But Mowry never earned a Ph.D. He admits he bought the fake transcripts online and used them to get an Indiana license to practice psychology.

He got a job with Behavioral Care Solutions. Its office in Illinois provides contract mental health workers in Indiana. When 24-Hour News 8 called the office, we repeatedly got a voicemail message.

Behavioral Care Solutions had a contract to provide a psychologist to treat patients at HCR ManorCare in Avon. Mowry was that psychologist.

When 24-Hour News 8 called the Avon assisted living facility, we were referred to the corporate office in Toledo, Ohio. We reached Julie Beckert, the Assistant Vice-President of Marketing Communications.

When asked whether the company was concerned about the fact that patients were under the care of a fraudulent psychologist, Beckert responded, “I will look into this further and get that to you in a statement."

In the e-mailed statement, Beckert points out that Mowry had an Indiana license to practice psychology.

She wrote, "It is our practice to conduct background checks on staff members, as appropriate, and rely on the license issued by the appropriate professional licensing board for consultants."

24-Hour News 8 also investigated Mowry's alleged work history. He gave the Indiana Psychology Licensing Board a letter from South Central Indiana Psychological Services indicating he treated patients there from 2007 through 2009.

But after a bit of research, 24-Hour News 8 learned David Mowry registered the domain for South Central Indiana Psychological Services, the place he claims to have worked for two years.

Tuesday, South Central Indiana Psychological Services had a Web site. But immediately after our story aired during Wednesday's 6 p.m. news, the site was no longer available.

Full statement from HCR ManorCare

The consulting psychologist accused of using fraudulent credentials to obtain an Indiana license to practice psychology is employed by Behavioral Care Solutions, LLC. Mr. Mowry provided certain consulting services at ManorCare for approximately six months and worked in conjunction with a psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner affiliated with Behavioral Care Solutions. At the time Mr. Mowry began work at ManorCare, he provided a license to practice psychology issued by the Indiana State Psychology Board.

ManorCare Health Services is reviewing this situation. ManorCare is committed to providing a safe environment for our patients and employees and we take situations such as this seriously. It is our practice to conduct background checks on staff members, as appropriate, and rely on the license issued by the appropriate professional licensing board for consultants.
