MONITOR, Ind. (WISH) - With more than two feet of water in their driveway, the Simmons family called their church family to help them gather all their belongings Tuesday.
One by one they waded through the flood waters with armfuls of furniture, boxes and family pets. They are just one of the families that found their backyard flooded and water rising when they awoke Tuesday morning.
The Simmons family lives in Monitor, Ind. about 4 miles west of Edna Mills, a tiny town evacuated because of flood waters. They all have the rising waters in the Wildcat Creek to blame.
Deborah Simmons says she bought the home three years ago and was told that three years before that the home was flooded. She didn't expect it to happen again while she was living in the home.
"They said it was a hundred year flood and it wouldn’t happen again in our lifetime. Yeah right," she said with tears in her eyes and a lump in her throat.
While the Simmons have flood insurance it only covers the house not their belongings. So, a borrowed truck and lots of help from friends is helping them save what they can.
The Simmons took their four dogs and one fish and will be spending the night in a hotel.
