AVON, Ind. (WISH) - More than 17,000 U.S. men and women have lost their lives serving in Afghanistan. Thursday night, dozens of people gathered at O'Charley’s in Avon to thank one veteran for his service.

Turns out, he went beyond the call of duty. Lt. Col. John Newman was recognized not only for his service, but also for his role in giving a little Afghan girl a better chance at life.

Staff at the restaurant in Avon showed their appreciation with a free meal for him and his family.

“Just coming home is awesome,” Newman said. “I am just so grateful to be home, and being able to spend time with friends and family just means the world.”

While in Afghanistan, the 17-year veteran played an integral role in making sure Asma Sharifulah made it from Afghanistan to Riley Hospital for Children.

The 2-year-old needed surgery to save her life. She was born with a defective heart. She underwent five surgeries and died a month after returning to Afghanistan. She didn’t make it, but her family said the extra month they gained with her meant everything.

“It's sad that she passed away, but it meant a lot to the Afghans that we were trying to help,” Newman said.

And now that Newman is home, he hasn't forgotten. He's working with his colleagues in Afghanistan to build a clinic in her memory.

Throughout the month, O'Charley's has a gift card promotion going to benefit the National Guard. For every $25 in gift cards sold, a $5 gift card will be given to the National Guard to give to soldiers and their families.
