UNDATED (WISH) - Sunday was considered one of the busiest travel days of the year and it turned out to be dangerous for many drivers along I-69 in Delaware County. A semi jack-knifed northwest of Muncie Sunday morning, closing the southbound lanes of the interstate for about an hour.

State police were extremely busy, investigating 16 slide-offs and three other crashes. In Anderson, the driver of an SUV was killed Sunday when she slammed head-on into a tree.

Drivers said they tried to take it slow in the tricky weather conditions.

"We just figure it's one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, but we're not in a hurry, we're taking our time, and when we get home, we get home," said Lori Bors, traveling from Florida.

"It's been pretty good. Not bad, I think traffic is down compared to previous years," said Robin and Sandy Seymore from Michigan.

State troopers blame many of the slide-offs on the slush on the side of the road after plows have been through. Authorities say it caused many driver to lose control.

A lot of people have run into problems trying to get home from their Thanksgiving travels. A snowstorm in Illinois has canceled more than 50 flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, one of the nation's busiest. Forecasters say 8 inches of snow is expected to fall on north central Illinois by Monday afternoon. And flights have been delayed an average of three hours at the major New York City airports.

It's not much better out west. Snow and ice have closed parts of Interstate 70 in Colorado. And at least five people were injured in separate accidents on icy roads in the eastern part of the state. More than 200 stranded travelers made it to a shelter the American Red Cross opened in Silverthorne, west of Denver. Snow also fell in this weekend in several other states including Iowa and Minnesota.
