LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI/WISH) - An Indiana soldier is recovering in a Texas hospital after being wounded in the Fort Hood shootings. 13 people were killed and 30 others were injured when Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire on fellow soldiers Thursday afternoon.

A bullet hit Corporal Nathan Hewitt in the calf and also grazed his hip. Corporal Hewitt was in the processing center getting vaccinations before deploying to Afghanistan when the shooting started.

24 Hour News 8 spoke with his mother Elizabeth Hewitt who said she was still stunned by the incident.

“I was shocked, and the first thing I wanted to do was talk to my son. You know, he's my baby,” said Hewitt.

She also said they were keeping him in the hospital overnight however he told her that he felt good enough to go back to his barracks. Corporal Hewitt is expected to fully recover.

He's a 2000 Lafayette-Jefferson high school graduate, and has already served a tour of duty in Iraq.
