Three weeks after we used a vacant home to shoot our story on the dangers of cooking fires, the Pike Township Fire Department burned it to the ground. The home, in the 5500 block of Lafayette Road, was donated to the department for training purposes. Firefighters were able to run “live fire” scenarios for several hours inside the home.
Pike Township Battalion Chief Chris Tragesser said the burn was particularly useful for the department’s new class of recruits.
“It's just invaluable to be able to get out here in a real time scenario, rather than hypotheticals that we usually have to deal with,” Tragesser told 24-Hour News 8.
The department originally planned to conduct its training burn over the summer, but Marion County’s burn ban and water restrictions forced them to reapply for open burning permits.
After the training was complete, firefighters let the home burn. It will be leveled and the ground there will be used for new development.
