INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indiana House Speaker Pat Bauer indicated Thursday morning that
the governor's plan to eliminate township government may not get a
hearing in a House Committee.
Rep. Bauer said the Kernan/Shepard Plan calling for
government consolidation should be renamed because it no longer
resembles the original proposal.
He also said that when the House looks at the proposal to
consolidate government, members will consider the role of township
trustees in handing out poor relief.
"I really believe that this dip in the economy, this virtual
depression in our cities, has given them a more visible role," said
Rep. Bauer.
State lawmakers are on a break until next Monday.
