INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - It’s deadline day in the special session of the General Assembly.
If lawmakers fail to pass a budget by midnight there will be a government shutdown.
The shutdown will be avoided with passage of a new 2-year, $28.5 billion budget.
Representatives of the Indiana State Teachers Association are in the office of House Speaker Pat Bauer. They are seeking to make last minute changes in a school funding formula they object to.
The tentative budget agreement calls for an increase of school funding of 1% in the first year and .3% in the second year of the budget.
The budget bill also includes a bailout for the Capital Improvement Board. That includes a hike in the hotel/motel tax, gone are proposed hikes in the car rental tax and the ticket tax.
The bill also preserves a billion dollar surplus.
