Senator Evan Bayh, (D) Indiana, wants the federal government to keep providing property tax relief. A law Bayh authored gives homeowners who do not itemize a property tax deduction of up to $500.

The law will expire at the end of the year.

Bayh now wants to lift the $500 cap and make the federal property tax relief law permanent.

"This is not the time to be adding to people's economic burden than is absolutely necessary. The bottom line here is that we need to make Washington work for us by lowering our property taxes, not the other way around, us working for Washington, D.C.," Bayh said.

State Republican Chairman Murray Clark calls the Bayh proposal misguided.
