INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Dan Burton has withstood a late charge by challenger Luke Messer to win the 5th District GOP nomination. Burton jumped out to an early lead over Messer and held on to win.
24-Hour News 8's Liza Danver reports Messer called to concede defeat to Burton late Tuesday night.
Messer was one of two main Burton challengers. He and the other GOP challengers had to work against each other while simultaneously taking on Burton.
"It’s made it a challenge but in the end it’s highlighted the fact that we need a new congressman," said Messer.
Dr. John McGoff was another Burton challenger. He said he's learned a lot during the primary race.
"We find a lot of people out there are angry. They’re not happy with what’s going on in Washington and Congressman Burton," he said.
Congressman Burton, who's campaign party is being held at the Claddagh Irish Pub on 96th Street, said he's proud of the way his team campaigned.
"Well I haven’t said anything bad about my opponents. We’ve run on the record and the issues...It’s up to the people now and if we don’t the people have spoken," he said.
