Indiana bill to overturn school standards delayed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The chairman of the Indiana Senate's Education Committee says he's working on a compromise to a bill that would pull the state from the Common Core State Standards national education initiative.

Hundreds of Common Core opponents attended a Statehouse rally last week ahead of a committee hearing on whether the state should retain the math and reading standards adopted by the state Board of Education in 2010.

Republican Sen. Dennis Kruse says he'll wait until at least next week before holding a vote on the bill. Kruse says a compromise could call for more state Board of Education public hearings and possibly blend the Common Core and previous state benchmarks.

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce and other Common Core supporters say the state Board of Education should decide school standards.
