Marion County breaks early voting records

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Marion County Clerk's Office says this was "another record-setting day for early voting." By the time the office closed on Tuesday, 750 people had come in to cast their ballots.

776 people voted on Monday during the first day of early voting for the coming election. That is a 14 percent increase in first-day voting compared to the election season of 2008.

Why such a turnout? The Clerk’s Communications Director, Angie Nussmeyer, told us "people have a heightened awareness of early voting now." She also said “Monday was a holiday for some and the last day for voter registration." Those might also be factors in drawing people to the office.

Nussmeyer isn’t ready to predict more records in the days ahead. “How we do the rest of the week will be a good indicator of what's to come,” she said.

Voters may visit the Marion County Clerk’s Office between 8am and 5pm this week and next week. There will be weekend voting options later in October.

Early voting ends at Noon, November 5, the day before Election Day.
