Lawmakers push for Sunday alcohol sales

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana lawmakers hoping to allow stores to sell alcohol on Sunday are facing opposition from liquor store owners, who worry the policy could put them out of business.

The Legislature is considering two bills that would change a current law restricting Sunday alcohol sales to restaurants, bars, breweries and wineries.

Liquor store owners say allowing take-home alcohol sales on Sunday would spread out six days' worth of sales over seven days and increase their costs. Owners also worry that people would buy alcohol at grocery stores while doing other shopping instead of visiting liquor stores on Sundays.

Republican Sen. Phil Boots of Crawfordsville says Indiana should encourage competition.

Boots says Indiana is the last state where people can buy alcohol in a restaurant on Sunday but not in a store.
