INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar is joining the German Marshall Fund after he leaves the Senate.

Lugar's office announced Wednesday he would serve as a senior fellow at the group and become the namesake of its new Lugar Diplomacy Institute.

The Marshall Fund is an outgrowth of the Marshall Plan established after World War II. It works to improve trans-Atlantic relationships. The new Lugar institute will work to improve communications between Congress and the diplomatic corps assembled in Washington.

Lugar has already announced plans to run a Washington internship program for the University of Indianapolis and lecture occasionally at the school.

Lugar leaves the Senate after 36 years following his loss to a tea party-backed opponent in the Republican primary.
