Mourdock's mistake fodder for Democrats

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule this week on the constitutional challenge to the president's health care reform law, and it makes sense that Richard Mourdock would use that ruling to help raise money for his Republican campaign for U.S. Senate.

It makes no sense, though, for four different versions of his fundraising appeal to hit YouTube before the ruling comes out. But that's what happened.

You can see Richard Mourdock on video expressing joy over the Supreme Court decision: "Well, we've had our brief moment of celebration because the Supreme Court ruled that Obamacare is, in fact, unconstitutional," he says.

How about a disappointed Mourdock?

"Well, the Supreme Court has done what none of us really thought could happen," he says in another video. "They ruled Obamacare constitutional."

But what if the court preserves some of the law and strikes down some of it?

"We now know that Obamacare came down to the split decision," he says in a third video.

Mourdock's even prepared if the Supreme Court takes a pass.

"They've found an answer to the healthcare issue, which basically led them to no decision at all," he says in a fourth video.

Democrats pounced on the mistake.

"For him, everything is about politics,” said state Democratic Chairman Dan Parker. "No matter what the decision is, he's going to make a political statement about it. So, he's not looking out for the best interest of Hoosiers."

The Mourdock campaign issued a statement, saying: "All campaigns prepare comment ahead of time for an important Supreme Court decision like this."

The mistaken posting of the videos to YouTube is attributed to a campaign staffer and a vendor for the Mourdock campaign. The videos were taken down fairly quickly, but not before several political Websites and the Democrats made copies. As a result, they're now preserved on the Internet.
