Political parties work hard on eve of election

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - In less than eight hours, the polls open in Indiana; and if you haven't voted already, chances are your party has contacted you to vote.

Both parties have spent a lot of time in the past couple of weeks going door to door making sure Hoosiers vote. They are also using the phone to connect with potential voters.

"We want to see you at the polls and I'm calling to ask you to vote for more jobs," said a volunteer from the Republican party phone bank.

"The voting place is open until 6 until 6," said a volunteer from the Democratic party phone bank.

It's election eve and Indiana Republicans and Democrats are making one last effort to get out the vote.

"One of the ways you can still reach voters really easily is by phone," said Indiana Democratic Spokesperson Jennifer Wagner.

"Thousands of volunteers are making phone calls reminding Hoosiers to vote tomorrow," said Indiana Republican Party Communications Director Pete Seat.

At each location, the calls are pretty much the same for the particular party and each party has made a lot of calls.

"Over the weekend we made well over a hundred thousand calls. Since we started in July, we've made over 1.8 million calls to Hoosiers," Seat said.

Wagner said volunteers called two million potential voters from 20 phone banks set up around the state in the past two weeks. On Sunday alone, volunteers at this Lafayette Square location made about 40,000 calls to potential voters.

"We are in GOTV mode, get out the vote mode and we want to make sure everybody gets out tomorrow and vote who hasn't already," she said.

"We are sensing a lot of excitement and enthusiasm on these calls," said Seat.

The Indiana Republican Party is counting on their volunteers at the 15 phone banks they call "Victory Centers" set up around the state.

"It's important to reach out and remind folks, you know, busy day to day lives tend to forget," Seat said.

And no matter who you vote for, both parties just don't want you to forget.

"We want to make sure that they get there; that they have their IDs with them," said Wagner.

"So much is at stake in this election," said Seat.

The phone banks will also be open all day tomorrow to make sure people are heading to the polls. If you encounter a problem voting, you can call a hotline number (877-371-1882) and someone will be there to help you.

Lawyers who are also volunteering their time will be standing by to answer any of your questions.
