Richard Mourdock on rape comment: Words were 'twisted'

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said people were twisting his word for partisan politics Wednesday morning after making widely-discussed comments about rape and abortion.

Mourdock called a morning news conference after an overnight and Wednesday morning media storm about his comments.

“I don’t think God wants rape. I don’t think he wants that all because rape is evil,” Mourdock said Wednesday morning.

Falling short of apologizing for what he said, Mourdock said he was sorry if people mistook what he said.

“So many people mistook, twisted, came to misunderstand the points that I was trying to make,” he said.

During Tuesday night’s debate, someone asked Mourdock if abortion should be allowed in cases of rape and incest. In his response he said, “I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happened.”
