INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - In the 4th Congressional District, Republican Steve Buyer is retiring. Secretary of State Todd Rokita is the Republican name to remember from among 13 candidates running to replace him.

Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita won a crowded GOP primary race. Rokita defeated 12 other candidates in this race.

Just before 9 o'clock Tuesday night, Rokita accepted the nomination in front of a large crowd of his supporters who gathered at Cambria Suites in Plainfield. With his wife Kathy by his side, Rokita told his supporters that positive campaigning still has a place in politics.

The 4th Congressional seat was a crowded one with 13 candidates on the ballot. One of those candidates, Senator Brandt Hershman of Monticello, had the support of Congressman Steve Buyer who vacated this congressional seat earlier this year.

Rokita said the people in the 4th Congressional District have voted for change and he's looking forward to serving them in Congress.

"We have serious issues out there that need to be addressed. We don't need politics as usual and I've think we've shown through our campaign that you can have a serious adult discussion without tearing the other guy down," said Rokita.

"I think I just want them to know that I a hundred percent support what he's doing. I think he is the right guy at this time to go out there and really do the right thing," said Kathy Rokita.

The 4th District Congressional Seat stretches from Monticello all the way down to Bedford, Indiana.

24-Hour News 8 talked with several voters, one voter from Brandt Hershman's district who said that it wasn't a tough decision who she was voting for. She said she voted for Todd Rokita because he ran a positive campaign.

Rokita said the work is not over. He says he plans to go out an campaign to more voters so they can hear his message.
