INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Democrat John Gregg is on the attack in the race for governor. Gregg wants voters to believe Republican Mike Pence is an extremist. He is relying on a 20-year -old publication to make that case.
Gregg calls it the "Pence Manifesto" and says it has been a blueprint for the Pence's career in Congress.
Pence's first TV ad includes this line from his wife Karen: "Mike became president of the Indiana Policy Review Foundation and started a successful career in radio."
It led Gregg to stage a campaign event in front of a Planned Parenthood clinic to read from a book published by the Indiana Policy Review Foundation in 1992 when Pence was president. It's titled: "Indiana Mandate: An Agenda for the 1990s."
"His blueprint, his manifesto declares that giving women too many choices leads to promiscuity," said Gregg, "and that a physician's judgment is not reliable and that safe sex outside of marriage is a myth."
Gregg, who is pro-life himself and says this is not about abortion, wants voters to know that Pence has worked in Congress to take federal funding away from Planned Parenthood.
"Even though federal reports show that every dollar invested in family planning saves the taxpayers $4," said Betty Cockrum of Planned Parenthood, who took part in the Gregg event.
According to his campaign, Pence was unavailable to respond. The campaign did put out a new ad that, like the first one, paints a rosy portrait of his life story.
Gregg doesn't have the money to match the ad buys, so he's bashing Pence in person.
"He's been an extremist all along," said Gregg, "but he wants to hide from that record, and we want to compare and contrast and aren't going to let him get away from his record."
That, even though John Gregg has said the most important issue is jobs.
A spokeswoman for the Pence campaign said Pence is not going to react to name-calling and that this election is about jobs and education, not social issues.
