INDOT: No campaign signs in rights-of-way

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - No campaign signs along state and federal highways.

That's the message the Indiana Department of Transportation is sending to political candidates and their volunteers as the May 8 primary elections closer. Indiana law prohibits campaign signs in federal and state highway rights of way. The law requires highway workers to remove all unauthorized signs for the safety of motorists.

The state and federal rights of way include all interstates and their interchanges and all intersections where at least one local, state or federal road intersects with a state or federal highway. The rights of way running parallel to highways extend to the back of ditches, to fence lines or to utility poles.

INDOT says it will take the signs it removes to its subdistrict offices. Candidates may reclaim them there.
