INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Keeping children safe in schools was the focus of a Justice Summit in Indianapolis on Thursday.
For the third year in a row, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller sponsored the gathering. School resource officers, he said, are an important part of the safety equation, not just because they guard the door, but because they establish relationships within the building that can keep problems from developing in the first place.
The trick is finding the money to pay for it.
"Everybody recognizes this need. We're going to do what we can as quickly as we can, but I would encourage local law enforcement to work with the school corporations to really prioritize this,” said Zoeller.
The Attorney General is behind a bill making its way through the Statehouse that would give schools some matching funds to help pay for school resource officers.
The bill has yet to have a hearing in the house.
