Still short on signatures, Wallace files for Gov's race

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Jim Wallace says he's staying in the race for governor but there is still a question about whether his name will appear on the May primary ballot.

The Republican candidate learned Wednesday that he was 111 signatures short of the requirement to get his name on the ballot. He filed petitions with the state Friday morning, anyway, under the belief that a review would show he met the threshold of 500 signatures in the 7th Congressional district.

Then, just before 11:30, a new certification gave him 486 signatures, still 14 short of the requirement.

"All of the other districts we are well over the top," said Wallace at the Statehouse, "and so today I am formally announcing my candidacy for governor of the State of Indiana."

Wallace could now face a challenge that would leave it up the state Election Commission to determine his fate.
