Mary McDermott joined WISH-TV News 8 in February of 1999 as a general assignment reporter. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, McDermott graduated from St. Louis University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.  Then in 1987, she earned a Masters Degree in American Studies.     

McDermott began her broadcast career as a producer/reporter at KETC, St. Louis Public Television.  She then moved to Lafayette, Indiana, where she was an anchor/reporter for WLFI-TV.  After this she held a similar position at KREM-TV in Spokane, Washington.  From here she moved to Portland, Oregon, to report for KGW-TV.  Prior to joining WISH-TV, McDermott anchored at KXL-AM, also in Portland.

McDermott has won numerous statewide Associated Press awards, as well as their National Award of Excellence in 1996.  She also received the Radio and Television News Directors Association Fellowship for study in Germany, in 1998.
