INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A 100 day long celebration of 100 years of Indiana High School basketball began December 18, 2009.
A Statehouse ceremony was held to kick off the celebration that will end with the beginning of the 100th state basketball tournament on March 27, 2010.
The mayor and the governor took part along with Indiana basketball legends including former IU and NBA star Quinn Buckner.
“And it's been a treasure to be a part of this entire process. Basketball where I grew up is good. Basketball is Indiana and Indiana is basketball. This is where it's terrific,” said Buckner.
Governor Mitch Daniels said, “This is really what brought us all together and it still does. It is so much more than a sport. I've sometimes thought of it as Indiana's second religion.”
The celebration will include historical displays in the Statehouse at malls and other places.
