INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Now that Tony Dungy has made a decision about his future, Colts
players and their fans are far from the only people disappointed
that he's leaving. Dungy made a huge impact in Central Indiana off
the field.
"He's been willing to use his position to forward causes he
cares about, especially related to children and youth," said Ellen
Annala, United Way.
Annala is president of the Indiana chapter of the United Way.
One of more than a dozen organizations to which Dungy has directly
given his name and time. Annala has been bracing for Dungy's
decision day.
Annala said, "You always dread losing somebody who has been
so involved with the community. You know there will be others, but
when you have someone like Tony who lives his conviction; it's
always a loss, so you hate to see him go. But you're also thankful
for the time you had with him."
Dungy did not just plug-in to the existing Central Indiana
charitable scene; he also brought in new groups. Without Dungy,
Indianapolis would likely not even have a chapter of the Carson
Scholars and may never have heard of "All Pro Dad."
"And Tony is really the gold standard when it comes to
spokesman involvement," said Darrin Gray, All Pro Dad. "Tony is
there from beginning to end, interacting with the fans and all the
folks that come down."
Gray and Annala and others in the business of giving lament
the inevitable loss, but also believe Dungy will stay active in
Central Indiana long after he's put the headset down.
"But he'll continue to be involved, in Indianapolis and Tampa
and Minnesota and all of the places he's been involved," said Gray.
Annala said, "I have no doubt both that his impact is
lasting, but also that we'll have a lasting relationship with Tony
Dungy."
