Sports leaders, college coaches, presidents of colleges and universities and thousands of others gathered Wednesday night to remember former NCAA President Myles Brand.
Dr. Brand was remembered for his passion for learning and for being an exceptional leader. People celebrated his accomplishments as an educator and his leadership at the NCAA.
On September 16, Brand lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at age 67.
"The educator, philosopher, administrator and friend we celebrate tonight," said CBS Broadcaster Jim Nantz, who emceed the tribute.
John Walda is the former president of IU's Board of Trustees. Walda spoke of Brand's friendship and mission to better human beings.
"He empowered people to act and to lead and he helped people find the value in who they were," said Walda.
Hoosier rocker John Mellencamp also performed, playing two of Brand's favorite songs, "Longest Days" and "Save Some Time to Dream."
A video screen played messages from Governor Mitch Daniels and Senator Evan Bayh.
Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski also sent a message to remember Brand.
"This is a regular guy who is an exceptional leader," said Coach Krzyzewski.
The tribute ended with Josh Brand. He remembered his father for never giving up on life and showing him how to live.
"I want you to know that you are always there for me Dad. I want you to know that you will be with me every morning when I wake up to face the world," said Brand.
A permanent endowment has been established in Myles Brand's name for cancer research at Indiana University. IU matched a $1 million donation to the endowment.
