INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis 500 winner and Auto Racing Hall of Fame member Jim Rathmann has died.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway said in a news release Wednesday night that Rathmann – who won the 1960 Indy 500 – died Wednesday at a hospice in Melbourne, Fla., nine days after suffering a seizure at his home.
Rathmann, 83, was runner-up at the Indianapolis 500 three times. In 1960, he beat Rodger Ward for the win in what many call the greatest two-man battle of all time. For the last half of the race, the two were rarely more than a few feet away from each other. The race featured 29 lead changes.
He was inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1993, and the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Kay, two sons, two stepsons, five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
