Rahal organizes Wheldon eBay benefit

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Graham Rahal is the unofficial founder of an eBay auction page for Wheldon’s family. He also competed in the Las Vegas race the day Wheldon died.

“The moment at the race was terrible,” Rahal said.

The next day Rahal put his helmet from that race up for auction.

Then other sports stars, teams and celebrities joined in.

“The Colts made an awesome jersey that said '77 Wheldon' on it,” Rahal said. “It's an incredible piece. It's so cool.”

Rahal said sports stars like Lance Armstrong have donated along with IndyCar, Formula One, Nascar, NHRA, NFL and MLB.

These eBay auctions reach beyond racing and even beyond sports, with celebs like Bono and Jay Leno also reaching out to donate.

EBay has waived all fees, so 100% of the proceeds will be put into a trust for Wheldon's wife, Susie, and young sons, Sebastian and Oliver.

But some folks have questioned why Wheldon’s family needs the financial help.

“I don't think I focus on that,” Rahall said. “It's simply the fact that we're doing the right thing. If this were me, and this happened to me, what would I wish people would do to help my family? This is it.”

Rahal said he’s received hundreds of items that will be posted in increments that range in price from $25 to thousands of dollars.
